Class Descriptions for the Dancer’s Journey at MKS

MINI MOVERS - Ages 18 months - 3 years with a Caregiver

Dance & Tumble

Toddlers love to dance, wiggle, jump, and move! We offer Mini Movers classes in a 5-Week format to allow for some of that energy to be expended in an enjoyable and interactive way.  Through dance, song, props, and mats, your mover will be introduced to the wonderful world of dance and tumble.  These 5-Week Mini Sessions are offered throughout the year. 

*No Dance Concert performance for this class.

LITTLE SUNBEAMS - Ages 3-5

Creative Dance/Ballet

Has your child dreamed of being a dancer?  In this class, students learn the fundamental characteristics of movement through dance games and Ballet technique.  Dancers will learn about time, space, force, and music in addition to their Ballet steps during all activities.  This teaches the students not only the steps but also the underlying qualities that make the steps unique! Classes may also include improvisational dancing as a form of self-expression and/or worship.  This is considered a Creative Movement/Pre-Ballet course.

Tumble Hop

For your energetic little movers, this upbeat class combines the strength and coordination of Tumble with the fun movement of Hip Hop.  Your Little Sunbeam will light the stage with his or her new skills and budding performer confidence.  A wonderful exploration of major motor skills and high energy movement! 

SHINE - Ages 5-7

Ballet & Tap Combo 

These classes are essential for students who want to develop their skills in Ballet and Tap technique. Students will focus on learning steps and combinations as well as developing their own sense of movement style and preferences. In the Ballet classes, students also learn the stories of various famous Ballets, helping the stories that have entertained through the decades come to life! This class is offered as Ballet & Tap in combination with a half hour of each discipline every week.

Tumble Hop/Jazz

A great introduction to upbeat, energizing movement through Tumbling, Hip Hop, and Jazz Dance.  Basic gymnastic/tumbling skills are taught in a fun and safe atmosphere, using a variety of mats. Necessary flexibility and strength training ensure proper progression of skills and technique in all three styles.  Fundamentals of Jazz and Hip Hop are taught through planned warm-ups, technique practiced across the floor, and choreography that will leave your dancer smiling!

Musical Theatre

Lights!  Curtain!  Action!  In this class, your performer will explore the essentials of acting, singing, and dancing, and learn to use them at the same time.  Improvisation games will also be used to help students grow in confidence and develop ways to respond and interact with fellow performers.  Everyone has a story to tell, and this class provides students the tools to do just that!  Be ready to have some fun and take the stage!

Dance Team/Poms

Does your child love to SPARKLE?  Dance Team/Poms is a great way to become familiar with the fundamentals of Jazz, Pom, & Kick, while also learning valuable lessons about leadership and team building.  This class is great for dancers who may be interested in joining a dance team in the future – teaching them to be stellar leaders who will stand for integrity and be positive role models among their peers!

Students will get to dive into a variety of different styles and build a combination using all of them!  Check out the following included genres that will be covered each week:

SPARK - Ages 7-9

IGNITE 1 - Ages 9-11, IGNITE 2 - Ages 11-13

Ballet

Often recognized as a foundation for learning the art of dance, Ballet helps to improve one’s sense of coordination and balance, encourages self-discipline, and increases strength, flexibility, and agility.  Students will learn Ballet technique using the Vaganova Method – a well thought out system of teaching Classical Ballet that creates dancers with beautiful lines and prepares students for professional experience.

Tap

Tap is a truly American dance form!  Using the Diane Gudat teaching system, students will learn the technique of Tap dancing through Tap terminology, music theory, exploration of rhythm patterns, and learning how to use your feet as percussive instruments.  Both improvisation and choreographed material will be used during instruction.  Bring on those happy feet!

Jazz

Jazz hands anyone?  From Broadway to kick lines, from Lyrical to Funk, Jazz dance uses body isolations, stylized walks, kicks, turns, and a variety of music to get you moving.  Through a safe and fun progression of technique, this is a great way to stretch yourself, expand your skill set, and tone those muscles.  

Hip Hop

From “old school” to the latest trends, this class covers Hip Hop technique, isolations, appropriate choreography, and Christian Hip Hop music – all in an encouraging, fun environment.  This class will have you grooving and dancing everywhere you go!

Musical Theatre

Want to improve and grow in Ballet technique?  Using the Vaganova method, dancers work at the barre, across the floor, and in the center on new combinations every month.  This class gives students time for heightened body awareness, builds strength, and challenges dancers to their best possible technique.   A wonderful supplement to any Ballet class, especially for dancers with goals to be on pointe.  *No Dance Concert performance for this class.

Modern/Contemporary (ages 12+)

Modern dance began in the early 20th century as a rebellion against the rules of Ballet. Today the term Modern dance has intertwined with the term Contemporary to include a broad range of styles. Focusing on the techniques of Modern and Contemporary dance visionaries, dancers will grow in grace, strength, self-expression, and improvisation. It is very popular in university programs and performance companies. 

GLOW & ILLUMINATE - Ages 13-Adult

Ballet

Flexibility & Conditioning

Ready to push yourself, break a sweat, and see personal growth?!  This class helps dancers take care of and prepare their bodies for all styles of dance.  Through a variety of exercises and workouts, students will work hard to gain stamina, strengthen muscles, and grow in flexibility to enhance performance in class and on stage.  Be ready to be challenged AND have fun!

Variations (ILLUMINATE)

Would you love to study choreography from famous Ballets performed throughout the centuries?  Learn Variations from well-known, classical Ballets such as Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, the Nutcracker, and many more!  A wonderful class to keep growing in your love for and knowledge of Ballet!

Intro to Pointe & Pointe (ILLUMINATE)

Whether you have dreamed of being a prima ballerina for years, or you are new to Ballet, dancing en pointe is a rewarding challenge to attain.  Pointe is available to students who have been approved by the Ballet instructor and the director.  Students enrolled in Pointe participate in the advanced Ballet classes, along with a supplementary/required Ballet class and attend Ballet class at least two days per week.  A class that is sure to keep you on your toes!

AURORA - Ages 3-Adult

AURORA – Dance for Special Dancers, Ages 3-Adult

God wants everyone to use their gifts to praise Him!  For many students with differing abilities, movement may be a new and exciting way to communicate with their Maker and their loved ones. These classes are tailored to fit different age groups and skill levels.  Students will learn multiple dance styles including Creative Dance, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Contemporary.  

*Aurora classes for our Special Needs students are offered at a discounted rate, as we know the families of Special Needs students may have expensive medical conditions and other needs.
